What is a brand mark?

A brand mark, distinct from the company name, serves as a visual emblem or icon that embodies your business.

Think of the Apple logo, the Nike Swoosh, or the McDonald’s Golden Arches.

Unlike a complete logo, a brand mark is a stand-alone graphic element that, over time, becomes instantly recognisable as your business, even when your company name isn’t attached to it.

Why your business needs a brand mark (not just a logo)

Your logo is your name. Your brand mark is your reputation.

When you have a strong brand mark, you achieve three critical business advantages:

  1. Instant recognition – Your brain processes images much faster than text. A well-designed brand mark allows a potential customer to recognise your business in the split second before they’ve even read your name.
  2. Versatility across platforms – Think about your Instagram profile picture. It’s tiny. Think about your favicon. It’s 16×16 pixels. A strong brand mark works at any size, while a text-based logo becomes illegible when shrunk down.
  3. Global appeal – If you ever plan to expand beyond your local market, a brand mark transcends language barriers. It communicates your brand’s essence visually, without relying on words.

4 types of brand marks

The iconic symbol

A simplified, literal image of your product or industry.

The abstract mark

A geometric shape that represents your brand’s values rather than your actual product.

The mascot

An illustrated character that represents your brand.

The emblem

Text enclosed within a symbol or shield.

How to know if your brand mark is working

The “scalability” test
Does it look clear at 16×16 pixels (favicon size)?
Does it look clear at 10 feet wide (billboard size)?

The “squint” test
Squint your eyes and look at your brand mark. Can you still recognise the shape? If it blurs into an unrecognisable blob, it’s too complex.

The “black and white” test
Does it work in a single colour? If you can’t print it in black ink on a white paper and still have it make sense, it’s relying too heavily on colour.

The “three-second memory” test
Show someone your brand mark for 3 seconds. Hide it. Ask them to sketch it from memory. If they can’t, it’s too complicated.

Common brand mark mistakes

Using Clip Art or stock icons
If we’ve seen your “brand mark” on a free template site, you’ve already lost credibility. Your mark must be entirely custom to your business.

Making it literal
If you’re a plumbing company, your instinct might be to use a toilet as your brand mark. Don’t! Abstract marks (like Nike’s swoosh) communicate values (speed, motion) rather than products.

Choosing trends over timelessness
Skeuomorphic (3D, glossy, drop-shadow) marks were popular in the 2010s. Now, they look dated. A flat, geometric mark will serve you for decades.

Ignoring the blank space
The white space around your brand mark is just as important as the mark itself. Cramming your mark into a tight container makes it feel cheap.
