Why the Best Leadership Conversations Don’t Happen in Boardrooms

Introducing GeoBrand's Value Proposition Workshops — on the water and in the City

There’s a conversation most leadership teams need to have, and most of them never quite manage it. Not because they don’t want to. Not because they don’t know it matters. But because the day-to-day gets in the way. The diary is full. The agenda is urgent. The space to think, really think, never quite materialises.

We’ve seen it again and again across 17 years of working with businesses of all shapes and sizes. The strategic questions, what do we really stand for, who are we actually serving, why should anyone choose us above everyone else, get deferred. There’s always a more pressing meeting.

Which is why we’ve started doing something about it. And why the setting is more important than you might think.

The Problem with the Boardroom

Boardrooms are optimised for business-as-usual. For decisions that need to be made, problems that need solving, updates that need delivering. They’re not designed for the kind of open, reflective, occasionally uncomfortable thinking that genuine strategic alignment requires.

When you’re sitting in a room where you’ve had a hundred previous meetings, you tend to think in the same patterns. The same assumptions go unchallenged. The same voices dominate. The same half-formed conclusions get reached, and then deferred again.

The research is clear: new environments encourage fresh perspectives, disrupt habitual thinking, and create psychological space for the questions that usually get avoided. It’s not a nice-to-have. It’s a core part of how good strategic thinking happens.

The GeoBrand Barge: Where Still Water Clears the Mind

Our London office has always been a little unconventional. We’re based at Limehouse Waterside, the floating one, as we call it, and after years of working on the water, we’ve become convinced that it does something to the quality of a conversation.

There’s a stillness to the GeoBrand Barge that you don’t find in most London meeting spaces. The noise of the city recedes. The agenda of the office feels far away. And in that quiet, leadership teams find they can actually ask the questions they’ve been putting off. What do we really stand for? Are we serving the right customers? What’s our value proposition, and does everyone in this room agree on what it is?

We’ll work through each element of your value proposition framework on the barge, and when it’s time to take a breath between sessions, we’ll take you out on the water, a different view of the city, and a different perspective on your business.

Stationers’ Hall: Where Ambition Finds Its Weight

For our second venue, we wanted somewhere that did the opposite of the Geo Brand Barge, somewhere that added weight rather than removing it. Somewhere with history. Somewhere that reminded you, before you’d even opened your notebook, that what you’re doing today could matter for a very long time.

Stationers’ Hall is one of London’s oldest livery halls, founded in 1403 and central to the communications and publishing world for over six centuries. This is where books were registered, where copyright was established, where ideas were given permanence. The panelled rooms and the sense of institutional weight aren’t just atmospheric, they’re a reminder that clear articulation of value, purpose, and narrative has always been at the heart of organisations that last.

When you work out your value proposition and brand narrative in Stationers’ Hall, the setting does something to your ambition. You’re not just filling in a framework. You’re doing something that feels like it deserves to last.

What the Workshop Actually Does

Our Value Proposition Workshops are structured around six key areas: audience, differentiation, value proposition, purpose and direction, brand narrative, and vision and values. Each area is explored through facilitated discussion and practical exercises, led by GeoBrand’s strategy team.

We work best with small leadership groups, typically 2 to 6 people, where every voice can be heard and real decisions can be made. These aren’t talking shops. They’re working sessions, and by the end, you’ll have genuine outputs: a clear value proposition, aligned leadership, and the foundations of a brand narrative that can guide your marketing, your communications, and your organisation’s direction for years ahead.

Every participant leaves with a Brand DNA Document,  a comprehensive summary of everything the workshop uncovered, written up as a single point of reference for future business, marketing, and brand decisions. Something concrete. Something you can actually use.

The Conversations That Matter Most

We’ve been doing this long enough to know that the most valuable moments in any workshop aren’t always the exercises. They’re the conversations that happen between them,  the ones that start with ‘actually, I’ve always thought…’ or ‘but do we really believe that?’, the honest, unscripted exchanges that only happen when people feel genuinely removed from the pressure of the everyday.

That’s what these venues create. That’s why the setting matters. And that’s why, when clients come back and tell us the workshop changed how they think about their business, they almost always mention the location in the same breath.

Never Settle for Ordinary

At GeoBrand, we’ve always believed that doing the work properly means never settling for ordinary. That applies to the brands we build, the strategies we develop, and now, to where we develop them.

If the most important strategic conversation your leadership team can have deserves a proper space to happen, and it does,  then you might as well do it somewhere extraordinary.

The GeoBrand Barge and Stationers’ Hall are ready when you are.
