Why Website Migrations Go Wrong
Without a 1000% commitment to SEO support, a migration isn't a "move" - it’s a gamble with your brand’s hard-earnt brand authority. Here is how we handle migrations at GeoBrand, helping to make sure that your hard-earned rankings don't vanish overnight.

From a website developer’s perspective, a migration often feels like a technical checklist: move the files, update the DNS, and check the SSL. But for Google, a migration is a massive disruption to a “trusted brand entity.”
The most common point of failure is what we like to call the“Launch and Pray” method. If you change your URL structure, your CMS, or your domain name without a mapped-out SEO strategy and strong SEO support, you aren’t just moving house – you’re moving without leaving a forwarding address. Your backlinks break, your “Knowledge Graph” connection dissolves and you lose your knowledge panel on the right hand side of search results. The worst part is that your traffic can literally flatline overnight.

Not All Website Migrations Are Equal
The time and resources needed for a migration depend entirely on the complexity. At GeoBrand, we categorise migrations by complexity to set realistic expectations for our customers:
| Complexity | Migration Type | Risk level to SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Server move or website reskin (no URL changes) | Minimal |
| Medium | CMS change (e.g., WordPress to Shopify) | Moderate (URLs usually change) |
| High | Domain name change or brand merger | Significant |
| Very High | Site consolidation (merging site A into site B) | Very high |
| Extreme | Domain + brand + CMS change (pretty much a new website, starting from scratch) | Critical (Not Recommended) |
| Extreme+ | Multiple websites merging into one global brand | Maximum Complexity |
Planning is everything
A simple migration might take 10-15 days of dedicated SEO support. However, for enterprise-level mergers, we have seen clients allocate 100+ days to ensure every single data point, as well as their precious brand entity, is protected.
Some clients believe that this is a waste of budget, but they haven’t seen migrations go wrong. Planning is crucial, with SEO involvement right from the very beginning.
The 3 Pillars of a Bulletproof Migration
1. The “Keep / Kill / Combine” Audit
This is the most time-consuming part of any migration, and it requires heavy client input. Before we move a single byte of data, we must audit your existing content.
- Keep: High-performing pages that move to the new site.
- Kill: Thin or outdated content that no longer serves the brand.
- Combine: Merging multiple pages into one “power page” to boost topical authority.
For massive merges, we often recommend what’s called a phased migration. Instead of moving everything at once, we migrate topical “clusters” of content. This allows us to monitor performance and mitigate risk in real-time.
2. Protecting the Brand Entity
A migration is a “shock” to your brand’s identity in the eyes of AI and search engines. We recommend a Brand Entity Audit ( which usually takes around 1.5 days) before the move. This maps out how your brand currently exists in the Knowledge Graph and identifies exactly what needs to be done to protect your brand authority.
For mergers and acquisitions, we use advanced structured data markup. This tells Google: “Company B hasn’t disappeared; it has been acquired by Company A.” This helps preserve the legal and authoritative connection between the two. We recommend hand-coding JSON-LD for your Homepage, About Us, and Service pages to go live the second the site launches. This acts as an “ID card” for search engines, immediately explaining the new site structure so you don’t have to wait weeks for “re-discovery.”
3. Before The Launch
We need to audit both the old site and new website to make sure there are no technical SEO issues before the launch. You don’t want to be carrying “dead pages” or critical crawling and indexing issues with you onto your shiny new website. Our developers fix any issues before you go live to ensure as smooth a migration as possible.
Don’t Leave Your Traffic to Chance
A migration is a huge risk for your website. It is the bridge between where your brand was and where it is going. At GeoBrand, we ensure that bridge is built on a foundation of technical SEO and semantic clarity.
