What is a wordmark?

A wordmark is a logo that consists entirely of your business name in a custom, stylised typographic treatment. Unlike a brand mark (which uses a symbol or icon), a wordmark relies purely on typography to represent your brand.

Think of the Google logo, Coca-Cola script, or FedEx wordmark. These are instantly recognisable without any accompanying icon—the typography is the logo.

Why your business might chose a wordmark

When you’re building a brand on a budget, a wordmark is often the smartest place to start. Here’s why:

  1. You’re building brand recognition from scratch – If you’re a new business, no one knows your symbol yet. A wordmark puts your name front and centre, making it easier for customers to remember who you are and search for you later.
  2. It’s more affordable to design – A well-crafted wordmark requires fewer design hours than a complex symbol, mascot, or emblem. For a business with tight budgets, this means you get professional branding without burning through your entire marketing budget.
  3. It works better for service-based businesses – If you’re a lawyer, accountant, consultant, or agency—what icon would you even use? A gavel? A calculator? A handshake? These clichés say nothing about your unique value. A wordmark lets your reputation speak for itself.
  4. It’s instantly scannable
When someone sees a wordmark, they immediately know who you are. No guesswork, no confusion. This is especially valuable if your business name is descriptive or includes your location.

3 types of wordmarks

Standard wordmark

A clean, professional treatment that prioritises readability over flair.

Stylised wordmark

A custom-drawn wordmark with distinct personality. Think curved letters, custom ligatures, or unique spacing.

Monogram

A special type of wordmark that uses initials instead of the full business name.

When should you use a wordmark?

Your business name is short
1-3 words work best. Longer names become unwieldy.

You’re a new business
Building name recognition is your priority.

You’re service-based
There’s no obvious symbol for “consulting” or “legal services.”

You’re on a budget
Wordmarks cost less to design and reproduce.

You have a unique name
If your name is memorable, lean into it!

You need versatility
Wordmarks work well at any size, from business cards to billboards.

When to skip the wordmark

Your name is generic
Use a symbol to add distinction.

Your name is very long
Use a monogram.

You’re targeting global markets
A symbol crosses language barriers better than text.

You need an app icon
A 16×16 pixel wordmark is unreadable – use a brand mark instead.

How to know if your wordmark is working

The “squint” test
Squint your eyes and look at the wordmark. The overall shape should be recognisable even when the details blur. If it’s just a squiggly line, the letterforms are too similar.

The “readability” test
Show your wordmark to someone for 2 seconds. Can they read the business name correctly? If they misread it, the typography is too stylised.

The “size” test
Print your wordmark at:

  • 16pt (business card size)
  • 72pt (letterhead size)
  • 200pt (poster size)

Does it work at all sizes? If it’s unreadable at small sizes or feels empty at large sizes, you need to adjust the letter-spacing (tracking).

The “versatility” test
Try your wordmark in:

  • Full colour
  • Black and white
  • White on black

If it doesn’t work in single colour, you’re relying too heavily on colour to make it recognisable.

The “uniqueness” test
Search for other businesses in your industry. Does your wordmark look similar to your competitors? If you blend in, you need to differentiate.
